    Hi,

I suppose that in the migration process wasn't copied all Brizy files and folders. The images used in Brizy pages are stored in a special Brizy folder. How did you migrate the site?
For the migration process, we are recommending using the WP All in One Migration plugin. It will copy all files and folders and will avoid this type of problems.

    Thanks!

    Best regards,
    Sandra

    Hi Sandra,

Thanks for coming back to me. You're a star!

In my mind I thought the best way was not to move or copy the site - (as on the surface of it, making a copy of the database, files and plugins to be then connected to a new wordpress install seems like it might have its own share of snags!)

All I did was take the the "livedomain.com" and point it at the directory of the existing main wordpress installation..and then also updated the Wordpress site URL's in Settings>General>Wordpress address and Site Address.

This method has worked ok for me in the past and this way there is no copying of files or databases. I'm just pointing the live domain at the existing installation.

It worked all apart from images...Which was strange because in the Media Library I could click on an image and it would allow me to open it in a new tab with the correct address in place.

I have since used AIO Wordpress Migration and this has proved to be flawless despite my concerns.

Would you say my orignal method is not the correct approach? To me it seems more sensible because the original file structure and database is just "staying put"

    Thanks again ,

    Rob

    Hi Rob,

Great to know that my suggestion helps you and now all is working fine.
If you choose the migrate manually the WP site to a new domain and/or host, you have to make a back up of your site's files, back up the WP database, create a new SQL Database and import the contents of your old site, upload your site’s files to the new site, edit your site’s wp-config.php file and configure and change the DNS (see here the source). It is a long process and here can exist some little mistakes that will create some inconveniences on the new site. Therefore, we recommend using the All in One Migration plugin. It is easier to use.

    Thanks!

    Best regards,
    Sandr

Thanks so much Sandra, this is very useful information. One last set of thoughts on it for my understanding.

The puzzle I still have within my (limited) understanding is as follows.

If I follow the manual steps on the article you have linked me to:

(Keep in mind...Im not changing host - im just trying to update the site domain from “test.domain.com” to “domain.com”)

Step 1 - choose new host. I can safely skip this step as Im not moving host.

step 2 - backup files. Well I make regular backups but again not needed in my situation because im not moving host

step 3 & step 4 backup and export SQL database. As above, Im not moving host so I dont need to migrate the database anywhere.

Step 5 & 6 Create new database and migrate the files. Again not needed because the files and database are staying put with my current host,

Step 7. Update wp-config to point at new database. Again not required because the database credentials are remaining the same.

Step 8. Reconfigure domain DNS. My host are also my domain provider, so by default any domain is preconfigured with the correct DNS settings. All I would need to do to configure the domain is update the destination to point it at the existing wordpress installation directory.

Im still a bit confused why it didn’t work. The site transferred fully with this method. It was just all images that didn’t come across.

Is it something to do with the way the images are referenced in the database? I fail to see how using the above manual method (even if you were moving host) would make any updates to the database as it seems to be just recommending a straight copy of the database via export/import...Unless the export/import process updates the entries on import to be in accordance with the new website URL?

Im happy I have it working with AIO migration plugin. But it would really helpful for my understanding to know why this manual method didn’t work.

    Hi Robert,

I'm sorry for my mistake by sharing you a link about how to migrate a site to a new hosting.
Anyway, the process very similar, the difference is that you have not to prepare the new hosting. Even if, you move a site from one domain to another domain (here isn't any difference if you move from test.site.com to the site.com or from olddomain.com to the newdomain.com or from site.com to the site.net) you have to create a backup, export the database, upload files to the new domain, import database, update site URL and home, update connection details. All these steps will help you to transfer safety all files, folders and information from one domain to another domain. You have to create the right environment for this process. It is similar to the process of moving the bathroom from 2nd floor to the 1st floor. Firstly you have to prepare the room where you plan to "migrate" it and only after this you can add the bathtub, washstand and other bath details. See here a good article on how to migrate a site to a new domain.
Also, I continue to say that the best method for migrating a site to a new domain or/and hosting is using the external plugin that will make all this job for you.

Let us know if we can help you with something else.

    Best regards,
    Sandra
