Hi Ed,
Your website scores reasonably well in GT Metrix. Kindly see the performance report of your website at https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.schoolofinterpersonalskills.com/6FLNijFv/

I also checked the speed of your website at my end. Please see my test at https://jmp.sh/6fOHpEHe
When you make an update to your website and check preview for the first time, the page loads slower. From the second time onwards, usually the page loads faster.
Every time a user accesses the website for the first time, the performance would not be poor. Let's say that 100 people visit your website in a day after you make an update. The speed for the first user will be slower, while the speed for the other 99 users will be normal.
After you make an update, when you access the website for the first time, cache is generated and saved. This causes the delay. You will be the first user to encounter slow performance if you are in the habit of checking your own work after every update. After that, everyone who visits your website will experience faster speed.
